Product data exchange is a key factor in achieving the goals of concurrent engineering. STEP is an international standard for product data exchange under development by ISO. This paper presents the architecture adopted for STEP development and discusses the implementation of STEP databases using database management systems. Recent work on STEP and object oriented databases is summarized.
